It's amazing the difference one person caring about you makes, Ben thinks as he pours the potatoes into the heating chamber. Yesterday I was hoping the Think Tank could come up with some way to kill me and today... He's so lost in his thoughts Ben completely misses Reed and Susan walking in on his and Johnny's little side project.
"What?" Johnny says all innocence as he drops several potatoes under Susan's big sister glare.
"What are you doing?" Reed asks stepping forward and removing his glasses to get a better look at their project.
Susan's phone rings but she rolls her eyes at Johnny before answering. "…yes, Susan Storm at the Baxter Building. We won't need your transport but we need a GPS fix…"
Caught red handed Ben stands quickly and hides the half empty bag of potatoes behind him. "We were, well, there was some stuff laying around, and we had an idea, and…"
"We're building a still." Johnny interrupts.
"…yeah," Ben says with a sideways glare at Johnny.
"I swear there are parts of my old particle accelerator in this. You're trying to make alcohol with something designed to create subatomic particles?" Reed says amazed and a little awed.
"We kinda thought that maybe it'd be…quicker?" Johnny says with a smile.
Susan hangs up her phone and turns to the others. "We're good to go. They say an escort flight will be over the building in five minutes."
"Where are we going?" Ben asks.
"Would you believe the Ultimates want our help?" That catches everyone's attention and they race to the roof hanger.
"So Dad's in some skunk works, we're all gonna get some super-spy security clearances and something really weird is happening?" Johnny asks as the run towards the VTOL fantasti-flyer.
"That's about all I know," Susan replies.
"And we get to meet the Ultimates?"
"Well, General Fury's running the show, Dad says."
"Nick Fury's cool. But I'd be up for maybe meeting Iron Man." Johnny continues as Reed helps Susan into the flyer.
"Or Thor," Ben says remembering the feel of Fawkes' Hammer of Righteous Smackdown. "Thor's cool."
"I'm kind of fond of Thor too. Big, hairy, muscly Thor," Susan says with a teasing grin for Reed.
"Get in the car." Reed says, disappointing Susan by not rising to the bait.
"Make me big boy," she fires back as she straps in. "GPS location's in the system, Reed."
"Okay, let's ride. Opening the main doors."
As the roof top doors open, Ben's buckling himself in and is surprised to find himself feeling almost giddy. Soon enough the thrust of the flyer pushes them into their seats and they rise above the Baxter Building and New York City to a clear, blue sky day.
"So where's this escort?" Reed asks looking around. "I mean, I don't know how a helicopter from the Triskelion's going to keep up with the flyer anyway…"
"Beats me," Susan responds. "Maybe we should be going higher and looking for a chase plane…" Just then Ben shoves his head forward looking up and they follow his gaze. "…I think I see…"
"…Our 'escort'…?" Reed says finishing her sentence.
"Oh, man. This is gonna be so good." Ben says nearly squirming in his seat as the figures of Iron Man and Thor descend towards them.
"Good afternoon, kids. They tell me the entire world is in danger from some hideous alien beasties once again. Terribly dreary, I know. So what we're going to do is fly across the continent very, very fast, discover all kinds of perfectly vile things, kill everybody and then have a little drink. Ready?" Iron Man's synthesized voice broadcasts.
Ben can't help but think Iron Man is a bit of a douche but he is impressed with Thor's hammer. It's much bigger in person, just as Thor is.
