Athletically and intellectually gifted, young Benn Grimm was regarded as a future football star as early as forth grade and was nicknamed "Grimm Reaper" for his line backing skills. At the age of seven, Grimm had befriended fellow student Reed Richards, protecting Reed from bullying students. In turn, Reed helped Ben with his studies, tutoring him in math and science. Reed also shared his research with Ben, showing him his devices built for accessing other dimensions. In fifth grade, Reed was moved uptown to a government research facility. Ben seldom saw his friend thereafter.

Ben finished high school and soon began college in the New York area. He remained in occasional contact with Reed over the years and when the time came for Reed to demonstrate his teleportation device, Ben was invited to observe. As the demonstration occurred during spring break, Ben rode cross country to the Nevada test site where he watched the test beside Reed, Susan and Johnny Storm, and Victor Van Damme. The device malfunctioned and Ben woke up in Mexico City, transformed into a rocky, brutish Thing.

Thing form, Post Ultimate Fantastic Four #03 Height: 7'5". Weight: 1650 lbs. Eyes: Blue. Hair: None. Unusual Features: Orange rock-like skin, three fingers and a thumb on each hand and four toes on each foot. Powers: Superhuman Stamina - Ben can exert himself at high levels of physical activity for about an hour before fatigue begins to set in. Enhanced Endurance - Ben's lungs are of greater volume and efficiency allowing him to hold his breath for up to nine minutes. He lungs also seem to be able to withstand toxic chemicals allowing him to breath even in acidic environments as long as there is at least some oxygen. Sensory Adaptation - Ben's five senses can withstand greater amounts of sensory stimuli than he could when he was a normal human being, with no reduced sensitivity. Temperature Tolerance - Ben's body is able to withstand extremes of temperature from -75° to 800° Fahrenheit for up to an hour before exposure or heat prostration occurs. Superhuman Durability - He can withstand the explosive effects of armor-piercing bazooka shells (15 pounds of high explosives) against his skin with no injury. He is still susceptible to diseases and emotional stress. Superhuman Strength - The Thing can lift at least 100 tons but the upper limit is unknown. In one test, Reed and Sue measured Ben's strength at seven tons per square inch. Abilities: Ben suffers no ill effects to his reflexes despite his greater mass. Paraphernalia: Due to his increased mass Ben must wear an impact suit designed by Reed. Merely walking about without the suit causes massive damage to nearby structures such as ruptured water mains and the like. The suit has been shown to take massive amounts of damage before being rendered inoperative.

Unusual Features: When Ben's powers are active his skin turns purple and he has a glowing aura. Powers: The full extent of Ben's powers remains to be seen. He seems to maintain his original power set but only time will tell for sure. Abilities: Ben is a gifted athlete with stamina, strength and reflexes better than an average male his age. He is also a natural pilot who has recently received military training from S.H.I.E.L.D., a U.S. military branch specializing in meta-humans.
